🎤 Teaching Stand-Up Comedy… and Falling in Love With Rewriting All Over Again!

I’ve been teaching a stand-up comedy class at the community center these past few weeks, and OMG — it has been amazing!

There’s something so special about watching people discover their funny. The moment they find a punchline… the moment a joke suddenly clicks… the moment they make the whole room laugh for the first time — I get to witness all of it up close.

And here’s something I didn’t expect:Teaching this class made me realize how much I LOVE rewriting jokes. I already love joke writing, but rewriting?I think I love it even more.

Rewrite is where the sparkle happens. It’s where the joke tightens, sharpens, gets cleaner, funnier, stronger. It’s like polishing a gemstone — suddenly you see the light hit just right.

Every week, my students bring in new material, and together we shape it, cut it, trim it

, and bring out the funny that was hiding inside. And they’re brave! They’re trying things, taking risks, finding their voice.

Their first performances are coming up soon, and I honestly can’t wait. It feels like watching baby birds get ready to fly — except these birds will have microphones and hopefully not poop on the stage.

I’m so proud of them already. And grateful that comedy continues to give me new ways to connect, create, and grow.

Rewrite, refine, repeat — that’s where the magic is.And I can’t wait to hear their first sets!!!
